The Commission met for its monthly plenary session on 17th October. The focus of the meeting was inter-agency co-operation and the Commission received a number of presentations from senior garda management on issues such as community engagement, and encouraging increased diversity in Garda recruitment. The issues raised in these presentations will be considered in more detail by the Commission’s working groups which continue to meet on an ongoing basis between full plenary sessions.

Each month, members of the Commission undertake study visits and stakeholder engagement sessions. In October, Commission members visited policing bodies in the UK to discuss policing accountability, governance and oversight.

A number of Commission members also visited the South Eastern Garda Division where they had the opportunity to visit the Garda College and Thurles Divisional HQ, as well as the School of Law at the University of Limerick.

The Chair of the Commission and members of the Commission’s secretariat attended the Conference of the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Philadelphia, USA. Kathleen O’Toole attended the Major Cities Chiefs Conference, and the Police Executive Research Forum. These events provided an opportunity to meet with police chiefs from around the USA and learn about international practice in policing.
